Hachiko Waits is a book about an Akita who follows his master, Professor Ueno, to the train station every morning. He also goes back to the train station every night at the same time to meet him. The people at the train station begin to notice the dog’s loyalty toward his master. But, one day the dog shows up at the train station and his master never gets off of the train. Everyday after that he still shows up to meet his master. The story goes on to tell what happens to Hachiko. I liked Hachiko, the main character in the book. He was a smart dog, and he was very cute. What made him cute to me was how loyal he was to his master. Hachiko’s personality made the book more believable. What I also liked about the book was that is was about a different culture. I learned some things about Japanese food, clothing and customs. Although I could not pronounce some of the words in the book, there was a glossary at the end to help me. I would recommend this book to middle school students who are animal lovers because they would appreciate the loyalty Hachiko has for his master. -- Kaitlan Brown, Grade 9, ECOT Learning Center
