Meggie and her father, Mo, have always been moving around. So, Meggie is not surprise when they move in with her aunt Elinor and Dustfinger, an "old friend" they met on the road. Mo gives Elinor a book to keep safe in her enormous library, but before Meggie can find anything out about it, men break in and take her father away. They demand that Dustfinger take them to "Capricorn's Village," the place he says Mo is. Upon arriving, they are locked away and Capricorn forces Mo to read things out of books. Finally, Mo explains to his daughter that, long ago while reading Inkheart to his wife, Teresa, Capricorn, Dustfinger, and Basta, his henchmen, all popped out of the book while Teresa and two cats popped into the book. Eventually, they escape and go to Fenoglio, Inkheart's author, to get another copy so Mo can read his wife out of the book. Fenoglio doesn't have any copies left, though. Soon, Capricorn's henchmen kidnap Meggie, Elinor, Dustfinger, and Fengolio (they couldn't find Mo). While in Capricorn's village, Meggie discovers that she can read things out of books, too. No longer needing Mo, they demand that Meggies reads Shadow, Capricorn's magical assassin, out of the book to kill Dustfinger and Resa, the woman Meggie believes to be her mother. Meanwhile, Mo and Farid, a boy Mo read out while at Capricorn's village, decides to burn the whole village down so that their friends can escape. Fengolio writes an alternate ending which Meggie reads instead. All of the people and creatures that Capricorn killed come back to life. Meggie, Mo, and Resa live with Elinor happily. Except, unfortunately, Fenoglio popped into the book. I like this book and would recommend it for people ages 9-14. ~ Dorie Chevlen, grade 6, Akiva Academy
