labor.jpg (15758 bytes)   What is Labor Studies?

Labor Studies involves the examination of the social, economic and political purposes and activities of trade unions in modern society. This will include the study of collective bargaining, labor law, labor history, trade union administration and philosophy, and emerging forms of labor/management relations.

The purpose of the Labor Studies Program at YSU is to provide trade unionists, labor relations and personnel specialists, and traditional students with a better understanding of the principles of American trade unionism, while at the same time preparing them for active participation in trade unions and/or employment in the fields of labor relations or personnel.

What Courses Must You Take?

The Labor Studies Program at Youngstown State is a two-year curriculum composed of basic skills and technical courses leading to an Associate in Labor Studies (A.L.S.) degree. Students not wishing to attain a degree may take only labor studies courses. These courses will be offered during the day and/or evening. Courses to be taught off campus may be requested if organizations can develop sufficient enrollment (minimum 20 students).

How Can You Enroll in the Labor Studies Program?

The Labor Studies Program is open to all high school graduates or students who have passed, or will be taking, a high school equivalency examination. Students who have not previously attended YSU or who have not enrolled in the University for one year, must submit an application for admission to the Admissions Office in Jones Hall. The Registrar's Office will then contact you regarding an appointment for registration.

Can You Receive Reimbursement for Educational Expenses?

Financial aid in the form of scholarship, grants-in-aid, and on-campus employment is available to prospective or currently enrolled students. Students currently employed are encouraged to review their union contracts or personnel handbook concerning tuition or textbook reimbursement. Many companies and unions have already approved tuition refunds. You should also explore both veteran and retraining benefits that may be available from the state or federal government.
