Field Trip Calendar

To help you plan your field trip to the Ward Beecher Planetarium, the following is a calendar for the academic year with trips already scheduled. If you see an empty day, it's probably fair game! I keep the calendar as up-to-date as possible. For the types of field trips programs available, please link here for the Teacher's Guide, which will also give you information about parking, eating on campus, and other necessary details.

Check back here once you've scheduled your trip if you can't remember the date or time - or you want confirmation that you're "on the calendar."

I schedule the trips on an individual basis, so call me at (330) 941-3619. If there's no answer (I spend a lot of time in the Planetarium) and you don't want to leave a message on my voicemail, then call Mary Lynn in the Department office at (330) 941-3616. You can also send me e-mail with your request (probably the best thing to do!) at slshanks-at-ysu.edu (replace the -at- with @; we're trying to prevent address harvesting).

The maximum number of students per show is 80. This allows each student to have an equally good view of the dome. More than 80 students can be scheduled (but no more than 100 at a time), but please be aware that some students will not be able to see as well as others, especially the "height challenged" students below about 4th grade. If you have more than 80 students, I'd strongly suggest splitting your group into two and sending half to the Butler, McDonough, Arms Museum, Medical Museum, or Steel Museum (check out the "Other Field Trip Opportunities" in the Teacher's Guide) while the other half is in the Planetarium and then switching.

If you have a number of parents attending as chaperones, please let them know that I give the best seats to the students, that I may have to separate their assigned groups, and that parents are expected to behave as well as the students.

Our public programs are also listed here - as a quick guide only for high school groups, NOT necessarily as a guide for field trips. Some items from my personal schedule are also listed so you can see when I'm not available.
