| In addition to teaching traditional physics and astronomy,
Doug Fowler
incorporates an interest in environmental issues into the subject
matter
of courses for non-majors. Questions about resource use and power
consumption
provide jumping off points for learning basic physics.
Doug is also an instructor in the Geology Department at YSU. This combination allows him to explore with his students in both departments questions ranging from the composition of the planets and the origin of the Solar System to the development of mineral resources and the disposal of solid waste. Doug Fowler has production experience from his past work with the Ward Beecher Planetarium. He is currently involved with the production of a series of programs (which he will co-host) for WYSU-FM 88.5, called “This Island Earth.” These programs will focus on various environmental issues and will begin airing in September of 2001. As a sideline, he routinely produces on-the-road audio-visual presentations on resource use and other related environmental issues. Schools, libraries, and other groups can make private arrangements by contacting him through the Department of Physics and Astronomy or sending email to: doug172@hotmail.com. Doug's on-the-road presentations can also include skywatching, learning constellations, and observing with telescopes.
