You and the Flu—your best defense is to be proactive

It is especially important this school season to be proactive against the flu.  Taking preventative measures is your best defense against the ‘seasonal’ flu and the much talked about H1N1 [Swine] flu.

  • The seasonal flu outbreak usually occurs between mid-fall thru early spring. Each year a vaccine is developed to target the type of virus that is anticipated.  The seasonal flu spreads mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza.  You can also become infected by touching something with the flu virus on it such as a door knob, computer keypad, gym weights, classroom desk, and then touching your nose, eyes, or mouth.

  • H1N1 [swine] flu is a new virus that is spreading rapidly around the world in the same way the seasonal flu is spread.  This virus was initially called the swine flu; however research has shown the virus not only has pig genes, but also bird and human genes.  The World Health Organization has signaled that a pandemic [world-wide] outbreak is underway.  Illnesses among persons infected with H1N1 flu virus have mostly been treated at home, but some cases have required hospitalization and some deaths have resulted.  Most people do not have immunity to the H1N1 virus.  Evidence collected to date indicates that college-age students under the age of 25 are in the group with the LEAST immunity to this new virus.  It is important that you take steps to stay healthy.
