Much of my work is based on the study of resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies or galaxy groups/clusters. By studying the individual stars (as well as stars clusters and individual nebulae) in galaxies(such as that of the dwarf galaxy VCC 1104, below), it is possible to learn more about the formation and subsequent evolution of galaxies. This can be done via the colours and brightnesses of the stars (photometry) to understand the chemical composition and ages of the stars, and also though the kinematics of individual stars.
