:: Most Annoying Web Effects::

Some things that happen on the web really bug me. Some of the things that annoy me most are things that people do to try to enhance the appearance of their site. Actually some of the things that made my list are just things about peoples sites that bug me. Anyhow, here is my list of the most annoying things on the web.

  • Any application that asks me to download something to either view something or use it for some other purpose.
  • Those pesky little alert boxes that great you when you open a page.
  • Fonts and colors that you obviously can't read on the provided background.
  • MIDI songs that start play when you open a page. Every time I hear one of those pesky things it makes me want to hunt down and shoot the person who allowed large numbers of people to get their hand on cheesy MIDI files to put on their pages. This use of MIDI gives it a bad name.
  • Anything that follows my mouse around. It is cute for about the first 6 seconds. If you are going to do it at all at least make it creative. I saw one guy that actually had an analogue watch dial that really told time it was fun but still annoying but, his creativity curbed my urge to stab myself with something.
  • People who don't know how to properly size their graphics so that they turn out pixilated.
  • Any of the prefab themes that come from FrontPage. I don't really like Microsoft...but...if you have to use it please don't just click a theme and go. Be creative. Its a free world and Microsoft controls enough of it.
  • Any forwarded emails containing information about the latest virus that will eat my computer alive. (OK so it isn't a web effect) If someone sends you some thing like that check to see it is a hoax before you forward it!!!! Anyhow, the person that sent it to me maybe daft enough to forward it and delete useful files from their computer but I'm not.
  • The numerous ads that look like actual windows. If its 4:00AM and I'm just finished finding the last bits of info for a paper or I've stayed up all night searching for stuff online or if for some reason I don't have my glasses on at the computer I have been known to accidentally click on these to close something that wasn't actually open. That only ever leads to either porn or a barrage of popup widows that won't die. I shouldn't have to deal with my own stupidity at 4:00AM.
